Signs Your Spouse Is Cheating, and When to Call a Private Investigator

By John Hubbard, licensed Florida private investigator and former detective · November 2026

Most people who call us about a cheating spouse already sense that something has changed. They aren't looking for drama. They want the truth, so they can decide what to do next. Below are the warning signs we hear about most often, what to do (and what not to do) while you're unsure, and when it makes sense to bring in a licensed private investigator.

Common signs of a cheating spouse

No single sign proves anything. People change jobs, get stressed, start working out. What matters is a pattern: several of these showing up around the same time, with explanations that don't quite add up.

  • The phone becomes off-limits. A new passcode, the phone always face down, calls taken in another room, messages deleted, or a second messaging app you've never heard of.
  • The schedule changes. Unexplained late nights, new "work trips," errands that take much longer than they should, or a new routine that always seems to happen without you.
  • Money you can't account for. Unfamiliar charges, cash withdrawals, a new credit card, or receipts for restaurants, hotels or gifts that didn't involve you.
  • A sudden focus on appearance. New clothes, a new fitness routine or a new look, especially when it starts out of nowhere.
  • Emotional distance. Less conversation, less affection, more irritation, or picking fights that make it easier to leave the house. Sometimes the opposite: unusual attentiveness or gifts that feel like guilt.
  • Defensive answers. Simple questions ("Where were you?") get anger, vague answers or stories that change over time.
  • A name that comes up a lot, or suddenly never. A new coworker, gym friend or "just a friend" who is either mentioned constantly or carefully avoided.
  • Social media changes. New accounts, hidden friend lists, or posts and photos you're no longer tagged in.

And never ignore your gut. If something feels wrong, it's worth finding out why.

What to do while you're unsure

  • Keep a journal. Write down dates, times, what was said and anything you saw, and keep it somewhere private that your spouse can't get to. It helps you think clearly, and it helps an investigator later.
  • Keep things normal. Changes in your own behavior are the most common way people tip off a partner.
  • Protect yourself. If divorce is a possibility, talk to a family law attorney early, especially if shared money or children are involved.
  • Take care of yourself. Talk to someone you trust while you find out.

What not to do

  • Don't break into their phone, email or social media. Getting into someone else's accounts without permission can be a crime, and evidence gathered that way can hurt you.
  • Don't follow them yourself. You're emotionally involved, and you may make irrational decisions you would not otherwise make. You're also easy to recognize, and once they notice, they'll be far more careful.
  • Don't tell them you've hired a PI, or threaten to. It changes their behavior overnight and can escalate the situation.

When to call a private investigator

  • When doubt is taking over your life and you need a clear answer, either way.
  • When you may need evidence for a divorce, alimony or custody matter, or when marital money may be going to someone else. Florida is a no-fault divorce state, but documented facts can still matter.
  • When you know something is coming up: a trip, a late meeting, a particular night of the week. Focused surveillance on the right days is the most efficient way to get answers.

What a licensed investigator actually does

We observe and document what can be seen from public places: where the person goes, who they meet and how long they stay. You get time-stamped photos and video, detailed activity logs and a professional written report, and we can testify if your case needs it. Our investigators work in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles, and we stay within the law, which is what keeps the evidence usable. Frequently asked questions

Should I confront my spouse before hiring a private investigator?

Usually not yet. A confrontation without facts tends to end in denial, and afterwards the person becomes more careful, which makes the truth harder and more expensive to find. Get clarity first, then decide what to do with it.

Is it legal to record my spouse's phone calls in Florida?

No, not without consent. Florida law requires the consent of everyone in a private conversation before it is recorded. Secretly recording calls can be a crime, and it can backfire on you in court.

What if the investigation shows my spouse isn't cheating?

Then you have your answer, and that is worth a lot. Many people tell us that knowing for sure, either way, is what finally lets them move forward. We report what we observe, nothing more and nothing less.

How soon can an investigator start?

Often the same day. Call 727-495-6565 any time, day or night. Same-day and after-hours requests can carry an emergency fee, which we tell you about up front, before any work begins.
